4.22.07
Apr 16th, 2007, 8:30pm

The upcoming happening titled 4.22.07 is where music, technology, arts, gesture, collaboration, and interactivity converge together in an evening of multimedia performances that fit no preexisting form or template. Hosted by the music department's new Digital Interactive Sound and Intermedia Studio (DISIS), the program will feature creations by students from various disciplines (music, computer science, arts), as well as music and CCTAD faculty. This event is a product of a year-long study of interactive multimedia systems which took place as part of the Computer Music & Multimedia Design music/CCTAD course that has been offered by the music department for the first time this year.

ABOUT DISIS
The Digital Interactive Sound and Intermedia Studio (DISIS) is music department's (http://www.music.vt.edu) latest response to a growing need for a performance/installation-based intermedia program to interface with CCTAD's mission as well as address the increasing research opportunities in areas of acoustics, psychoacoustics, sonification, and interactive systems. Established by the music department's CCTAD hire Dr. Ivica Ico Bukvic, the studio's focus is on exploring interactive and cognitive systems and allied creative and research endeavors. In the past year, the studio has generated a number of exploratory grant proposals, many of which were a direct result of collaboration with other programs and disciplines across the campus and beyond, including CS, CHCI, ECE, CLAHS Humanities and Education, Assistive Technology office, National University of Singapore, and Princeton University. We are pleased to report that several of our proposals have been successful and we look forward to our second year in our new space.

ABOUT CCTAD
The Virginia Tech's Collaborative for Creative Technologies in the Arts and Design is an essential platform for research and practice in digital arts at Virginia Tech, which brings together the artistic and technological expertise in the departments of Art and Art History, Communication, Computer Science, and Music. The faculty and students involved in the CCTAD create cultural products in digital environments and digital environments for the creation of culture.

CCTAD facilitates research, creative activity, and education in cutting edge technologies and their use in contemporary arts and design. Through CCTAD courses, students engage in interdisciplinary group projects that require a seamless flow of design knowledge, logical thinking, and technology skills. Research focuses on developing practical ways to facilitate the flow of knowledge among different academic disciplines while employing a creative interdisciplinary approach to contemporary problems.

CCTAD was created in response to the Provost's call for new initiatives in the areas of the biosciences, critical technologies, and the arts, humanities, and social sciences at Virginia Tech; it is largest regional interdisciplinary initiative of its kind.
