As member of VT's Digital Arts Research Collaborative, I've spent this past summer in part working on an interactive multimedia art installation for the new Arts Museum of Western Virginia whose completion is projected for fall 2008. Over the course of six weeks I had an opportunity to develop a CAVE-like communal system using Max/MSP/Jitter. While the final product is an ongoing work-in-progress currently somewhere in between art and technology, in its current state it has shown considerable potential as a demoing platform as well as a foundation for various offspring research vectors. Although the final product is in part designed to explore communal effects of multimedia interaction, due to delays in obtaining necessary sensors, at the end of this project phase we've decided to settle for a simple amplitude-driven interaction using a small array of microphones. The next phase is tentatively set for the next summer.
