Although a good number of my past papers have dealt predominantly with relatively tangible issues surrounding the topics of music and technology, my latest paper I am to present at the upcoming SPARK festival this coming Saturday (February 19, 2005) focuses on the elusive but nonetheless eternally attractive topic of silence and its role in music. By recontextualizing the notion of silence and correlating it with the world of numbers, my aim is to propose a set of potentially controversial approaches to elevating the importance of silence in a work of art. It is my hope that the presentation of the aforementioned ideas will foster a healthy discussion which will likely reveal new and potentially even more interesting ways of utilizing the analogy of numbers in order to extend the usefulness and importance of silence in the context of music.
